AISI Recorded Nominal Surge in U.S. Steel Shipments

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests marginal surge in steel shipments during the month of October 2022, over the prior month. However, the shipments registered decline over the corresponding month a year before.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.210 million net tons in October 2022. This is significantly down by 12.2% from the shipments of 8.215 million net tons in the same month a year before. The shipments during the month witnessed marginal increase by 1.0% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.140 million net tons in the month of September this year.

The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 75.675 million net tons during the initial ten-month period of the year. This is marginally down by 4.2% when matched with the year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 78.954 million net tons during Jan-Oct ‘21.

The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the initial ten-month period of 2022. The shipments of cold rolled sheets during this period have declined heavily by nearly 14% over the previous year. Meantime, the shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip and hot rolled sheet were down by 8% each, AISI report said.
