AISI Posted Notable Dip in Finished Steel Import Permits

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that steel import permit applications for the month of November this year totalled 2.113 million net tons. The figures, based on Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) by the U.S Commerce Department, suggest 9.6% dip from permit tons of 2.336 million net tons recorded in the prior month.

The import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.891 million net tons in November this year, significantly down by 3.9%, compared to final imports total of 1.968 million net tons in October. The finished steel import market share was estimated at 23% during the month and at 24% during the year-to-date period, said AISI.

The steel imports totalled 28.747 million net tons during the first eleven months of 2022. This is inclusive of November SIMA permits and October final imports. Meantime, the finished steel imports totalled 23.527 million net tons during Jan-Nov ‘22. The total and finished steel imports surged higher by 0.6% and 14.7% respectively from the corresponding eleven-month period in 2021.

The finished steel import with largest increase in November permits, compared to October final imports, includes pressure tubings and oil country goods, which were up by 99% and 50% respectively. Upon comparison with the corresponding period in 2021, the imports of standard pipe and line pipe have registered significant increase by 51% and 502% respectively, during the year-to-date period.
