The import permit tonnage for finished steel in May of this year was 1.746 million net tons, up by 8.4% from the final import total of 1.611 million net tons in April 2025.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) recently released Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) statistics for May 2025, showing a significant rise in steel import permit applications.
The Commerce Department reported that 2.377 million net tons of permit applications were submitted in May of this year. Compared to the 2.266 million net tonnage permit tons recorded the previous month, this indicates a notable rise of more than 4.9%. When compared to the final steel import permits in April 2025, the total imports showed a significant increase of over 14.5%, according to AISI data.

Compared to the final import total of 1.611 million net tons in April 2025, the import permit tonnage for completed steel in May of this year was 1.746 million net tons, an increase of 8.4%.
Over the same period in 2024, licenses for hot-rolled sheets and plates in coils grew by 44% and 50%, respectively, while permits for sheets and strips with other metallic coating increased by about 38%. Tin plate, stainless pipe and tube, and line pipe are some of the products that have seen notable year-to-date improvements when compared to the same period in 2024.
Canada was the offshore nation with the most steel import permit applications in May 2025, followed by South Korea, Germany, Brazil, and Mexico.
