Aftermaths of Trump's Reinstation of Tariffs on Canadian Aluminum Imports

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The U.S. has decided to reinstate the 10% tariff on aluminum imports from Canada. The proclamation imposing the tariffs on imports of non-alloyed unwrought aluminum from Canada was signed by President Trump on Thursday, Aug 6th. The tariffs will take effect on 16th August.

Announcing the decision, Trump noted that his administration had agreed to lift the tariffs on the basis of promise made by Canadian administration that it will ensure that the U.S. is not flooded with exports from that country. However, the Canadian companies have broken that commitment. The administration has decided to reimpose tariffs, in order to defend domestic aluminum industry and protect its numerous jobs, he added.

Meantime, Tom Dobbins, president and CEO of the Washington-headquartered Aluminum Association noted that it is extremely disappointed that the administration has failed to listen to the vast majority of domestic aluminum companies and users. The ill-advised action on one of the key trading partners is likely to undermine the benefits of the recently signed U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

According to the Aluminum Association, the reports of surge in primary aluminum imports from Canada are grossly exaggerated. It will continue to monitor trade flows and advocate for removal of aluminum tariffs on all market economy countries, Dobbins added.
