The NCC recommended development of effective regulatory frameworks for e-waste management towards better management and control of e-waste in Nigeria.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) noted that informal recyclers dominate the African e-waste recycling sector. It warned that unprofessional methods used to handle toxic end-of-life electronic de vices poses threat not only to environment, but also to the life of recyclers.

While speaking at the sixth Lagos Public Relations Stakeholders’ Conference, Prof Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, NCC issued a warning that informal recyclers are exposed to life-threatening health problems. The dangerous electronic waste are often handled using primitive techniques, without wearing adequate protective devices.

Such unprofessional handling of e-waste leads to inhalation of toxic chemicals and result in recyclers coming into direct contact with hazardous materials. The electronic devices are made up of toxic materials including lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium. In addition, plastic and other hazardous chemicals in them could cause harm to human health and environment, Danbatta added.

The NCC recommended development of effective regulatory frameworks for e-waste management towards better management and control of e-waste in Nigeria, by ensuring participation of all stakeholders associated in the life cycle of approved electronic devices. Moreover, the government should create and allocate more funds for operative e-waste management.
