US scrap plastics exports plunged in August

According to latest government data, the exports of scrap plastics by the US declined sharply over the previous month in August this year.

US scrap plastics exports plunged in August

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): According to latest government data, the exports of scrap plastic by the US dropped sharply during the month of August this year, in comparison with the previous month. The exports had dropped during the month of July by over 8% when matched with the month before. Also, cumulative scrap plastic exports by the country during Jan-Aug ’15 dropped marginally over the previous year.

The country’s exports of plastic scrap during the month of August 2015 totaled 344.58 million pounds. When compared with the exports during the previous month, the volume of exports was down considerably by 16.8%. The pace of decline has almost doubled when compared with the month-on-month decline of 8% recorded in July this year. Also, exports registered sharp drop of 22.5% when compared with those during August 2014. The US plastic scrap exports had totaled 444.62 million pounds during August ‘14.

The weighted price of scrap plastic exports during August this year amounted to 17.28 cents per pound. The weighted price saw marginal decline of 3.8% from July 2015 levels. The weighted price of scrap plastic exports during July ‘15 had amounted to 17.96 cents per pound. Upon comparison with August 2014, the weighted price registered a decline of 15.6%.

The US exports of recovered plastic during the initial eight-month period of the year amounted to 3.15 billion pounds. The exports were down marginally by 0.5% when compared with the exports during the corresponding eight-month period in 2014.

The average price of scrap plastic exports during the period from January through August in 2015 was 18.22 cents per pound, which is 7.9% down year-on-year.
