TOKYO (Scrap Monster): The most recent data published by the Japanese Ministry of Finance indicates that the country’s scrap imports surged considerably in August year-on-year.
According to statistics, the country’s total scrap imports during the month of August this year amounted to 23,800 tons. The imports have gone higher by 56.7% when compared with the scrap imports by the country during August 2012.From a month ago, Japan’s scrap imports have surged by 53.6%.
The largest exporter of scrap to Japan in August was Korea. The scrap imports from Korea during the month totaled 8,400 tons, 33.3% higher year-on-year. The imports from Hong Kong totaled 5,400 tons and those from Taiwan amounted to 4,600 tons.
The total scrap imports by the country during the initial eight-month period of the year amounted to 129,800 tons. The scrap imports during the first eight months were lower by 23.4% over the previous year.
The Ministry also forecasts the total scrap imports by the country during the whole year 2013 to reach 195,000 tons.
