South Africa's Iron Ore Shipments Surged 12% in April

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The data released by the South African Revenue Service suggests significant jump in iron ore exports by the country during the month of April this year. The exports during the month totaled 5.144 million tonnes. The exports were up by 10.6% when matched with the same month a year before. The iron ore exports by the country had totaled 4.651 million tonnes in April 2016. The export prices averaged at $74.0 per tonne, marginally down by 3.5% when matched with the average price $76.7 during the previous month. When compared with the same month in 2016, the average export prices jumped higher significantly by 28%. The average export price in April 2016 was $57.90 per tonne.

By loading port, Saldanha Bay accounted for 81.3% of total iron ore shipments during April this year. The shipment from the port totaled 4.183 million tonnes at an average price of $80.1 per tonne. In second place was Komatipoort with shipments totaling 492,232 tonnes. Richards Bay accounted for 467,105 tonnes of iron ore exports from the country.

The shipment of non-agglomerated iron ore during the month has declined marginally by 0.5% from 1.992 million tonnes in April 2016 to 1.981 million tonnes in April this year. The exports from Saldanha Bay totaled 1.022 million tonnes, accounting for nearly 52% of the whole. The price of export averaged at 79.8 per tonne. The value of exports from the port amounted to $81.5 million. The shipment from Komatipoort totaled 492,232 tonnes at an average price of $59.7 per tonne. The third largest port by volume of shipment of non-agglomerated ore was Richards Bay. The shipment from the port totaled 466,949 tonnes during April this year.

South Africa reported 19% jump in agglomerated iron ore shipments during the month when compared with April 2016. The shipments totaled 3.162 million tonnes when compared with 2.659 million tonnes a year before. The shipments out of Saldanah Bay totaled 3.161 million tonnes, accounting for bulk of the agglomerated ore exports out of the country. The exports averaged at $80.1 per tonne. The value of exports totaled $253.4 million during the month. The other main loading ports were Johannesburg (470,000 tonnes), Beit Bridge (420,000) and Richards Bay (156,000 tonnes).

The cumulative shipments during the first four months of the year totaled 20.936 million tonnes, 2.4% higher when compared with the shipments of 20.455 million tonnes in Jan-Apr ’16. Saldanha Bay accounted for 17.642 million tonnes of shipment during the four-month period, followed by Richards Bay (1.896 million tonnes), Komatipoort (1.393 million tonnes), Beit Bridge (1,913 tonnes) , Johannesburg (1,801 tonnes) and Durban (898 tonnes).

The non-agglomerated iron ore shipments out of the country totaled 8.377 million tonnes in Jan-Apr ‘17, marginally higher by 1.5% over the previous year. The key ports by shipment volume were Saldanha Bay (5.088 million tonnes), Richards Bay (1.895 million tonnes) and Komatipoort (1.393 million tonnes).

The agglomerated ore shipments increased by nearly 3% over the year from 12.205 million tonnes in Jan-Apr ’16 to 12.558 million tonnes in Jan-Apr ’17. Saldanha Bay accounted for bulk of the shipments, accounting for 12.554 million tonnes. The other main loading ports were Johannesburg (1,801 tonnes), Richards Bay (1,273 tonnes) and Beit Bridge (1,133 tonnes).
