Fire breaks out at Cedar City electronics recycling facility

CEDAR CITY (Scrap Monster): Fire broke out at Stone Castle Recycling early morning Tuesday around 5.45 AM. A passerby who noticed thick fumes of smoke coming out of the facility located at 1342 Industrial Road in Cedar City called 911.

Fire crews who responded took hours to bring the fire under control. Majority of the fire was extinguished by 1 PM. But firefighters stayed at the site for a longer time, dousing small fires.

According to Cedar City Fire Department, two piles of electronic waste piled up in a building were destroyed by the fire. The concrete building also have suffered damages. However, no workers were inside the building when the fire incident occurred. As a result, no one was injured, they added.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and is under investigation.

This is not the first fire accident at Stone Castle Recycling’s facilities. A fire was reported at the Clearfield site in 2008. Another fire incident was reported last March at the Parowan facility.

Stone Castle Recycling is the largest family-owned electronic recycling company in Utah. It recycles all types of electronic and electrical devices. It also recycles appliances, computers, plastics, paper, cardboard, glass & metals.
