SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Yukon government has launched an independent technical review to identify the causes of the heap leach accident at Victoria Gold’s Eagle gold mine site.
The three-member board comprises geotechnical expert Jean-Marie Konrad, senior civil engineer Les Sawatsky, and professional engineer Mark Smith. They will look into various aspects of design, construction, operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the heap leach facility, to identify the reasons that led to the landslide in June this year, said the government press release.

It is anticipated that the independent technical evaluation would be finished in six to eight months. The investigation's findings will be made available to the public. The findings of the review board are expected to help the government with the changes required to reduce or eliminate similar future infrastructure failures.
Meanwhile, the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyak Dun (FNNND) disagreed with the government’s decision to constitute a review board. The board process would erase its participation in the investigation, it said. Instead, the First Nation called for a time-bound public inquiry.
