YTD U.S Raw Steel Output Surged by a Fifth

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 11.8% during the week ending on December 4, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.807 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 81.9%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.616 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 73.1% during the corresponding week a year before. On the contrary, the weekly crude steel production declined marginally by 1.6% over the week. The production was 1.837 million NT during the week ended November 27, 2021.

The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 88.081 million NT through the week ending on December 4, 2021. This is up by 19.6% from the production which totalled 73.669 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 67.8% to 81.6% over the year.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 748,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 618,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-164, Midwest-201 and Western-76.
