SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) highlighted the important role played by global steel industry in driving sustainability.

In his New Year message, Edwin Basson, Director General, worldsteel noted that the industry had to confront with several challenges in 2020. All countries and regions, with the exception of China, had experienced negative growth in 2020. An earliest return to more normal human and economic activity is the need of the hour. The anticipated improvement in market conditions is likely to boost steel demand by 4.1% in 2021, he said.

As part of its sustainability efforts, the trade body aims to take key actions to address the emissions from the industry, encourage customers to use advanced steel products and maximise the reuse, remanufacturing and recycling of steel products. The successful implementation of the above initiatives will result in potential reduction in direct and indirect emissions. The steel industry is committed to achieve net-zero emissions, he added.

The steel trade body reiterated that safety continues to be one among the topmost priorities. The industry has been successful in substantially reducing fatality and lost time injury frequency rates over the past several years. The comprehensive process safety management system by the industry body includes a new tool that will enable members to have self-assessment of mental health.
