The Chinese output totalled 383.2 tonnes, falling from the previous year. The country has been posting decline in output for the third consecutive year, primarily on account of tougher environmental policies by Chinese administration. The gold mine production in Russia totalled 329.5 tonnes, which is almost 50m tonnes higher than 2018. Nearly two-thirds of the locally mined gold was purchased by the country’s central bank. In third place was Australia with production of 325.1 tonnes. The country’s gold mine output rose for the seventh straight year.

The other leading gold producing countries were the U.S. (200.2 tonnes), Canada (182.9 tonnes), Peru (143.3 tonnes), Ghana (142.4 tonnes), South Africa (118.2 tonnes), Mexico (111.4 tonnes) and Brazil (106.9 tonnes).
