World's Most Modern Sawmill to be Built in Rauma, Finland

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Meta Fibre, a subsidiary of Metsa Group has announced its decision to build what could be the world’s most modern sawmill in Rauma, Finland. The construction works are expected to commence this spring. The company expects to begin production by Q3 2022, subject to covid-19 impacts. The company expects investment of around EUR 200 million for the project.

The state-of-the-art sawmill will have annual capacity to produce nearly 750,000 cubic metres of pine sawn timber, which will be sold to European and Asian markets. It will incorporate the latest technologies, including machine vision and artificial intelligence at different stages of the sawing process. The mill is expected to generate around 100 direct jobs and additional 500 across its direct value chain. This is in addition to the projected 1,500 around jobs during the construction phase.

The location of the new saw mill offers significant logistics benefits, due to its close proximity with the Port of Rauma.

Metsa Fibre has signed an agreement with AFRY on planning the sawmill’s construction phase and with A-Insinöörit on construction management services The company has already entered into agreement with Veisto on the delivery of the new sawline. The negotiations with other equipment suppliers are in progress.
