SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Mining Intelligence declared the list world’s top ten open pit and underground mines by ore throughput during the initial nine-month period of the current year. All 9 out of the ten mines featured in the list, except Indonesia’s Grasberg, are open-pit mines. It must be noted that Grasberg had moved to underground operations in 2020.
The Escondida copper mine in Chile was ranked top in the list. The mine, operated by BHP, recorded a throughput of 97.4 mt of ore during Q1-Q3 this year. Second on the list was Cobre Panama, owned by First Quantum Minerals, whose throughput totalled 75.5 mt during the period. In third place was Collahuasi in Chile, which is a joint venture project between Anglo American and Glencore. The mine’s ore throughput totalled 64.2 mt.
Buenavista in Mexico, owned by Southern Copper emerged in fourth place, with a throughput of 55.7 mt. The Grasberg underground mine in Indonesia, which produces gold, silver as well as copper, was ranked fifth, with a throughput of 52.1 mt.
