World Crude Steel Production Soared 4.1% in April

The North American production totaled 9.955 Mt in April this year, higher by 6.4% when compared with the production of 9.360 Mt in April 2017.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world countries reported higher level of crude steel production in April this year when compared with the previous year. The combined production data from 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates 4.1% jump in monthly production over the previous year. The global steel production had surged higher by 4% in March '18 also.

The April 2018 global crude steel production totaled 148.322 million tonnes (Mt), as compared with the production of 142.433 Mt in April last year. The combined production during the first four months of the year totaled 575.155 Mt.

All regions with the exception of Other European region reported increased production during the month. The output by the Oceania region recorded nearly 20% jump over the previous year. The production by Other Europe region comprising of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey dropped by 3.7%.

Major North American producers including the U.S., Canada and Mexico reported increased output during the month. The U.S. output totaled 6.930 Mt, accounting for nearly 70% of the regional output. Meantime, the South American production too surged higher by 4.2% over the previous year, mainly on the back of jump in production volumes by Argentina, Chile and Peru.

The African crude steel output was up by 3.8%, despite sharp 44% decline in Libyan output. Egypt, the leading regional steel producer, recorded 13.3% year-on-year jump in output during April 2018. The output by EU-28 region was up by 3.4% from 14.387 Mt in April ’17 to 14.876 Mt in April this year. The African production was up marginally by 3.8% at 1.131 Mt. The Middle East output too was up significantly by 8.6% to total 2.904 Mt. The CIS region’s production totaled 8.391 Mt, higher by 2.4% year-on-year.
