World Crude Steel Output Surged 5% in First Half of 2019

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The crude steel production by 64 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) totaled 158.978 million tonnes (Mt) in June 2019, higher by 4.6% when compared with June 2018. This is in accordance with the latest monthly crude steel production statistics published by the Association.

The Asian region produced 115.622 Mt of crude steel in June this year. The production by the region climbed higher by 7.4% from 107.676 Mt in June ’18. China, Vietnam and India led the surge, with Chinese output recording 10% year-on-year increase. The regional output increased despite huge production decline in certain countries in the region including Pakistan and Thailand. The Middle East and African crude steel output were up by 3.4% and 0.7% respectively.

The North American output recorded marginal decline by 0.2%. Although the U.S. production climbed higher by just over 3%, the production by other major producers including Canada and Cuba dropped significantly. The South American output too was down by 3.4% over the previous year.

The European crude steel output registered 3% decline. The production by CIS countries too was down by 2.6%.

The world steel production totaled 925.064 Mt during the first six months of the current year, up by 4.9% when compared with the production of 882.005 Mt from January to June in 2018, worldsteel data.
