World BFI Output Recorded Notable Decline in November

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world blast furnace iron (BFI) output showed notable decline during the month of November 2017.

In accordance with the latest production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), global BFI output has declined by nearly 7% from the previous month to total 92.864 million tonnes (Mt) during the month. The global BFI output had totaled 99.403 Mt in October this year. The above production figures are based on production data compiled from 38 member countries that accounted for approximately 99% of the world BFI output during 2016.

Region-wise analysis of world BFI production indicates that Asian region was the single largest producer during the month. The region accounted for bulk of the BFI output during the month. The Asian production totaled 71.946 Mt, accounting for over 72% share of global production. However, the regional output declined sharply from 77.580 Mt produced during the prior month. All countries in the region recorded reduced output when matched with the previous month. China, with an output of 54.883 Mt, was the largest producer in the region. Japan produced 6.424 Mt during the month, to become the second largest producer in the region. The BFI output by India totaled 5.565 Mt. The other primary producing nations were South Korea (3.865 Mt) and Taiwan (1.210 Mt).

The North American BFI output dropped marginally from 2.631 Mt in October to 2.540 Mt in November 2017. The US accounted for over 64% of the total regional output. The output by the country decreased slightly from 1.691 Mt to 1.630 Mt. Canada was the second largest producer with an output of 535,000 tonnes, followed by Mexico with 375,000 tonnes. The cumulative BFI output by the North American countries during the initial eleven-month period of the current year totaled 30.125 Mt.

South America recorded marginal decline in blast furnace iron output in November this year. The production by the region totaled 2.701 Mt during the month. Brazil accounted for bulk of the production by the region. Brazil’s BFI output totaled 2.440 Mt, accounting for over 90% of the regional production during the month. The other major BFI producers in the region were Argentina (181,000 tonnes), Chile (55,000 tonnes) and Colombia (20,000 tonnes).
