WorkSafeBC Fines West Fraser for High-Risk Violation at Quesnel Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  Canadian forestry and lumber company West Fraser was fined by B.C.’s occupational safety regulator WorkSafeBC on charges of violation at its Quesnel, B.C. mill operations. A fine of about $114,000 (equivalent of Canadian Dollars 150,983.96) was imposed on the company after inspections revealed accumulations of combustible dust in several buildings belonging to the manufacturing site.

According to WorkSafeBC, hazardous accumulations of combustible dust were found near potential ignition sources including lighting, motors and rotating machinery, during an inspection. The company was cited for its failure to remove buildups of dust inside a debarker building and a plywood plant. The penalty notice cited the violation under ‘high-risk’ category.

West Fraser had been recently named as one among Canada’s top 100 employers by Mediacorp, for seventh year in a row.

Recently, WorkSafeBC had fined Prince George-based Brink Forest Products Ltd. $38,000 for serious safety violations.
