Wisconsin Announces Opening of New State-of-the-Art Glass Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Strategic Materials Inc. (SMI) - North America’s largest glass recycler has announced opening of its state-of-the-art glass recycling facility in Delavan, Wisconsin. The new facility was built to meet increasing demand for glass recycling in the state. The Delavan facility will replace the company’s East Troy facility, sources said. The company expects to begin production from the facility during this month itself.

The recycling facility was built in co-operation with state recycling organizations including Associated Recyclers of Wisconsin (AROW), Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Badger Chapter and Wisconsin Counties Solid Waste Manager Association (WCSWARA). The 125,000 square feet facility is built on a 15-acre site. The centralized location of the facility is expected to help the state to cut down the logistics cost associated with transportation of collected glass for recycling. As per estimates, Wisconsin generates approximately 121,675 tons of glass per annum in its recycling stream, including residential and commercial tonnage.

Denis Suggs, Strategic Materials President and Chief Executive Officer applauded the state of Wisconsin for their progressive stance on glass recycling and willingness to collaborate with the company for the benefit of the state and its environment. The use of recycled glass results in up to 30% energy savings and significant reduction in carbon emissions. The new facility will better serve its customers as well as suppliers by way of expanding its North American manufacturing footprint and is expected to make significant contributions to the local economy.

Recently, Strategic Materials had announced that it has signed a definitive agreement with Greenwich, CT-based private investment firm Littlejohn & Co. LLC, whereby all of its assets will be acquired by Littlejohn. The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The company had announced that the transaction will be closed during the month of November this year, subject to customary closing conditions.

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Strategic Materials is a leading recycling company with nearly 47 facilities across the US, Canada and Mexico. The company mainly operates two divisions- Strategic Materials, Inc.-the Glass Division and Nexcycle Canada-the Plastics division. The glass division is the company’s largest business segment. It processes various glass categories such as flint, amber, green, 3-mix and plate.
