West Fraser Announced Temporary Curtailment at Quesnel Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Vancouver, B.C.-based Wrest Fraser Timber Company announced its decision to temporarily curtail operations at Cariboo Pulp & Paper in Quesnel for a period of one month in mid-April this year. It plans to curtail operations for another month during the third quarter of the year as well.

The company noted that there has been a dip in availability of sawmill residuals, due to widespread beetle infestation, fire incidents and unfavourable policy decisions by the government. This has forced the company to temporarily curtail operations at the mill. The action will help West Fraser to align its production capacity, it noted.

The impacts on employees due to the curtailments will be partially mitigated through vacation scheduling and alternative work assignments.

Earlier in January this year, West Fraser had announced indefinite curtailment of operations at its Perry sawmill in Florida, citing high fibre costs and softening lumber markets as the reasons.

West Fraser is the latest company to announce production curtailments. Earlier, Canfor had announced elimination of one of its pulp lines in Prince George, shutdown of its Chetwynd sawmill and pellet plant and extended shutdown of its Houston mill. The other companies to implement curtailments include Tolko Industries and Sinclair Forest Products.
