SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. announced its decision to temporarily adopt three day work week at its B.C. lumber mills. The decision to roll back operations at mills across B.C. comes at a time when the industry is staring at significant inventory challenges.
The reduced operating hours at mills is likely to impact around 740 employees. Out of these, 110 belong to Williams Lake and 150 in Quesnel.
In an email to Black Press Media, West Fraser spokesperson Joyce Wagenaar noted that the transportation crisis in Western Canada has left the industry with significant inventory challenges. The crisis had started with flooding in the Lower Mainland last fall. In order to manage its inventories, the company has been forced to shift from a five to three-day operating schedule across its B.C. mills for a temporary period. Furthermore, the email stated that the company is working to minimize the impacts on employees.
Earlier in November last year, the company had announced reduction on account of devastating rainfall and floods in southern B.C. region. The company is still assessing the situation and is looking forward to move back to its normal operating schedule at the earliest, Wagenaar added.
