SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable surge in steel shipments during the month of February this year compared with the same month a year ago. On the other hand, the shipments registered modest decline over the prior month.
According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.233 million net tons in February 2022. This is modestly higher by 7.4% from the shipments of 6.753 million net tons in the same month a year before. The shipments during the month recorded modest decline by 6.8% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.758 million net tons in the opening month of the current year.
The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 14.990 million net tons during the initial two-month period of the year. This is significantly higher by 5.9% when matched with the year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 14.156 million net tons during Jan-Feb ‘21.
The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the first two months of 2022. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip during this period have surged higher by 3% from the previous year. The shipments of hot rolled sheet surged higher by 3%, whereas those of cold rolled sheet recorded 4% year-on-year decline, AISI noted.
