U.S. Steel Mills Posted Decline in June Shipments

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests modest decline in steel shipments during the month of June this year matched with the comparable month in 2021. Also, the shipments registered modest decline over the prior month as well.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.606 million net tons in June this year. This is modestly down by 5.3% from the shipments of 8.032 million net tons in the same month a year before. The shipments during the month recorded modest decline by 3.8% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.911 million net tons in May 2022.

The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 45.973 million net tons during the initial half-yearly period of the year. This is more or less unchanged when matched with the six-month period a year before. The shipments by U.S. steel mills had totalled 45.970 million net tons during Jan-June ‘21.

The report also provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the first half of 2022. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip during this period have witnessed a dip by 3% year-on-year. The shipments of hot rolled sheet declined by 5%, whereas those of cold rolled sheet recorded significant dip by 11% year-on-year, AISI noted.
