U.S. Steel Mill Shipments Posted Notable Decline

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly steel shipment data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable decline during the month of October this year compared with the same month a year before. The year-to-date shipments by mills too were down sharply over 2019. On the other hand, the shipments surged modestly over the prior month.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 6.748 million net tons in October this year. This is down by 14.7% from the shipments of 7.914 million net tons in October 2019. The shipments during the month recorded marginal increase by 1.3% from the prior month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 6.663 million net tons in September 2020.

The AISI data indicates that year-to-date steel shipments by the U.S. totalled 67.197 million net tons in 2020. This is significantly lower by 16.5% when matched with those during the corresponding period in 2019. The shipments had totalled 80.492 million net tons during the first ten-month period last year.

The report provides month-on-month comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products. The shipments of cold rolled sheets surged higher by 3% from the previous month. The shipments of hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip too were up by 3%, whereas hot rolled sheet shipments edged higher marginally by 2%.
