U.S. Steel Mill Capability Utilization Surged: AISI

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 21.9% during the week ending on September 18, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.874 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 84.9%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.537 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 68.6% during the corresponding week a year before. However, the weekly crude steel production declined marginally by 0.4% over the week. The production had totalled 1.882 million NT during the week ended September 11, 2021.

The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 67.660 million NT through the week ending on September 18, 2021. This is up by 20.2% from the production which totalled 56.304 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 66.8% to 80.9% over the year.

The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 776,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 641,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-176, Midwest-205 and Western-76.
