U.S. Raw Steel Production Continued to Dip: AISI

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent production data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests marginal decline in domestic raw steel production during the week ended November 23, 2019. The mill capability utilization rate also recorded notable decline.

The U.S. raw steel production totalled 1.861 million net tons in the week ended November 23, 2019. The weekly production registered 2.2% decline over the previous year. The production was 1.903 million net tons in the week ending 23rd November in 2018. The mill capability utilization rates were down from 81.2% a year before to 80.4%.

When matched with the prior week production of 1.876 million net tons, the current week production was down by 0.8%. It must be noted that the U.S. domestic steel mills had recorded capability utilization rate of 81.1% during the previous week ending November 16, 2019.

The cumulative steel tonnage during the year-to-date period until November 23rd was 87.198 million net tons. The capability utilization rate averaged at 80.3% during this period, which is higher when compared with 78.1% in the corresponding period in 2018. The production during the corresponding year-to-date period in 2018 had totalled 85.290 million net tons, AISI data said.

The Southern region output totalled 716,000 net tons, followed by Great Lakes region with a production of 673,000 net tons. The production by the other regions is as follows: North East-203,000 net tons, Midwest-193,000 net tons and Western-76,000 net tons.
