SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. raw steel production reported marginal jump during the week ended June 30, 2018, upon comparison with the corresponding week a year before. Also, the production edged higher when matched with the prior week. The domestic steel industry in the country has responded positively to the hefty tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on steel and aluminum imports.
The U.S. domestic raw steel production totaled 1.781 million net tons (NT) in the week ending on June 30, 2018. The production represented marginal increase by 0.5% when compared with the production during the prior week. The U.S. steel output had totaled 1.772 million NT in the previous week ending June 23, 2018. When compared with the corresponding week last year, the output was up by 1.9%. The U.S. output had totaled only 1.747 million NT in the week ending June 16, 2017.
The capability utilization rate of U.S. mills registered slight increase when compared with the previous year. During the week ending June 30, 2018, the U.S. steel mills reported capability utilization rate of 76%. The capability utilization during the corresponding week last year was 74.9% and that during the prior week was 75.6%.

The steel production during the half-yearly period totaled 45.614 million NT, at a capability utilization rate of 75.5%. During the same period last year, the production had totaled 44.839 million NT. The year-to-date production recorded 1.7% jump in 2018. The capability utilization too stood higher from 74.4% during the previous year.
According to AISI, steel mills in the Great Lakes region produced 653,000 tons of metal during the week ended June 30, 2018, registering second straight week of increase. The regional production was up by 2% over the previous week. The weekly production by other regions was as follows: North East (215,000 tons), Midwest (187,000 tons), Southern (652,000 tons) and Western (74,000 tons).
