Oil Country Goods reported largest increase in December permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 118%.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates notable increase in steel import permit applications during the month of December 2023.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.308 million net tons in December this year. This is significantly higher by around 14.9% when matched with 2.008 million net tons permit tons recorded during the prior month. When compared with November 2023 preliminary imports of 2.018 million net tons, the December 2023 steel import permit tonnage recorded surge by almost 14.4%, AISI data said.

In December last year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.743 million net tons, considerably higher by 17.2% from the preliminary imports total of 1.487 million net tons in November 2023.

The import permits for line pipes and heavy structural shapes too were up by 82% and 57% respectively. The products with notable increases during the full year 2023 compared with the year prior to it include cut lengths plates and standard rails, said AISI report.
In December 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada. The largest offshore suppliers during the full year 2023 were Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
