Union Threatens of Strike at Resolute's Gold Mine in Mali

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Australia-headquartered Resolute Mining Limited said that it has received a strike notice from labour union at its gold mine in Mali. The notice for a 10-day strike at the Syama Gold Mine was given by the Local Union Committee of the Union Nationale des Travailleurs du Mali SOMISY-SA.

The company has been informed that the unionized workers will be forced to observe the strike if certain demands put forward by them are not accepted by the company. The principal demand relates to resumption of full pay to employees who were affected as part of Covid-19 protocols.

Meantime, the company has noted that the Union has already been informed that the strike notice is irresponsible, opportunistic and that it represents a breach of the commitments made in the agreement. It sought Union’s understanding and support for the actions which were necessitated by the pandemic outbreak. Further, it said that it is considering how to respond to the strike notice.

Taking into consideration, the uncertainty of the impact of the strike and subsequent actions that may be taken by the company, Resolute announced that its production and cost guidance for the year ending 31^st December, 2020 has been withdrawn. Earlier, the company expected to produce approximately 430,000 ounces of gold from the mine in 2020.
