SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The shipments of softwood lumber by sawmills in the European countries recorded significant jump during the year, says latest issue of Wood Resources Quarterly.
Traditionally, most of the lumber shipments from the European countries were to neighbouring countries. The shipments to other destinations such as the Middle East/Northern Africa (MENA), the US, and Japan accounted for only around one-fifth of the total shipments. In 2020, this share more than doubled to 45%. The export ts to China witnessed the biggest surge. The exports outside of Europe were mainly driven by stagnant wood demand and abundant local availability of log supply in European countries.
The primary exporters of softwood lumber in the region were Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Austria. These four countries together accounted for almost two-thirds of the total export volume. The estimated exports from the above counties stood at 36 million cubic metres in 2020, surging higher by almost 20% during the past ten years. Incidentally, 65% of Finland’s exports were to markets outside the continent.
The primary export destinations were the U.S. and China. There has been a significant increase in European softwood lumber exports to smaller Asian markets including India, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and Australia.
