The American Steel Shipments Witnessed Notable Surge

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly steel shipment data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable surge during the month of April this year compared with the same month a year before. However, the shipments registered marginal decline over the prior month.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.845 million net tons in April 2021. This is significantly higher by 39.5% from the shipments of 5.623 million net tons in the same month in 2020. The shipments during the month recorded marginal decline by 1.3% from the prior month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.950 million net tons in March this year.

The report provides month-on-month comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products. The shipments of hot rolled sheets slipped the most, falling by nearly 2% from the prior month. The shipments of hot dipped galvanized sheet recorded a surge by 11%, whereas those of cold rolled sheet witnessed 3% month-on-month surge.

The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 29.951 million net tons during the initial four-month period of the year. This is up slightly by 0.7% when matched with the corresponding period a year before. The steel shipments by mills had totalled 29.733 million net tons during Jan-Apr ’20.
