Tata Steel Signed MoU with MOL to Reduce GHG Emissions

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The leading Indian steelmaker Tata Steel announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with marine transport group Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) towards development and deployment of environment-friendly shipping solutions.

According to Peeyush Gupta, Vice President- Supply Chain, Tata Steel, the agreement aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions during transportation of raw materials via ocean, by making use of wind energy. The first vessel to be equipped with “Wind Challenger” project is expected to start operation next year. The rigid sail system successfully captures the wind energy at sea.

The partnership with the reputed global marine transport company will help Tata Steel to align its shipping activities with responsible environmental behaviour, thus boosting its efforts towards achieving sustainable shipping.

Commenting on the agreement, Toshiaki, Tanaka, Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer, MOL said that the partnership with Tata Steel will encourage the company to boost efforts to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, in line with MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.1.
