Tata Steel Imported Huge Volumes of Russian Coal

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Trade sources indicated that Tata Steel imported around 75,000 tonnes of coal from Russia during the month of May this year. The report of coal purchase comes after the company’s announcement of its plans to stop doing business with Russia.

Earlier in April, the steelmaker had announced that all of its manufacturing sites in India, the UK and the Netherlands have ensured alternative supply of raw materials so as to end its dependence on Russian raw materials and that it was taking a conscious decision to stop doing business with that country.

Out of the around 75,000 tonnes of CPI coal imported from Russia's Vanino port, nearly 42,000 tonnes were offloaded in the Paradip port, whereas around 32,500 tonnes in Haldia port.

Meantime, Tata Steel spokesperson noted that the deal to import coal from Russia was made even before the company announced its decision to sever business ties with Russia. However, he declined to provide further details. Furthermore, he clarified that there has been no coal purchases from Russia ever since the announcement was made.

Tata Steel was the only steelmaker in India to cut business ties with Russia. Other steelmakers have been importing bulk quantities of steelmaking raw materials, especially coal, from that country.
