The project would lead to creation of a complete recycling system for beverage cartons in Benelux and surrounding regions.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso joined hands with Tetra Pak to carry out a joint feasibility study on establishing a comprehensive beverage carton recycling facility at Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge site in Belgium. The feasibility study is expected to be completed during the initial half of 2023.
The project would lead to creation of a complete recycling system for beverage cartons in Benelux and surrounding regions. It must be noted that Benelux region currently has no beverage carton recycling infrastructure. As per estimates, nearly 75,000 tonnes of beverage cartons are put on the Benelux market every year.
Stora Enso would be responsible for processing the collected beverage cartons to recover fibers, which in turn will serve as source material for producing recycled containerboard at its Langerbrugge site. The polymer and aluminum materials will be processed by Tetra Pak’s dedicated partner.
The proposed recycling line will have an initial processing capability of 50,000 tonnes of recycled cartons per year, which will be increased afterwards.
The proposed facility intends to design a shared beverage carton recycling solution, in response to the rising demand for circular paper-based packaging solutions in Benelux. The combined effort by the two companies is expected to put in place a circular solution, thereby minimising litter.
