SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Stora Enso Skutskar Mill in Sweden has boosted its annual pulp capacity from meagre 6,000 tonnes in 1895 to 545,000 tonnes today. Along with production growth, the company has made significant progress in improving its environmental footprint over the past several years.
The Skutskar mill has taken several steps to turn it into a carbon-neutral operation. The fossil-free power supply to the mill was guaranteed by way of construction of five wind mills on the mill site. In 2016, the mill started burning wood-based pitch oil for energy instead of crude oil. It has used the tree, all its parts, forestry residuals, and industrial side streams in the best and most suitable way, as replacement to fossil-based materials.

Today, all the energy, heat and power produced at the mill is based on biofuels. As on December 2021, the mill has achieved 93% self-sufficiency in electricity. Occasionally, the mill produces energy in excess, which is sold to the national grid.
Stora Enso had announced investment of Eur 40 million in January this year, aimed at enhancing operational performance for fluff pulp production. It aims to reduce power consumption and water usage, along with lowering the use of bleaching chemicals. The most recent readings indicate that the mill has achieved 99% fossil-free production.
