SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tenaris- the leading global manufacturer and supplier of steel pipes announced its decision to cut its Beaver County workforce by nearly 120 people. The layoffs will be mainly concentrated on its heat treatment and finishing lines in Koppel facility. The decision is likely to affect around 170 employees belonging to Tenaris facilities Beaver County and Brookfield, Ohio.
The suspension of operations at the Koppel facility in 2020, following the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic had then affected hundreds of employees. Later in 2021, the company had brought back the facility online after implementing necessary upgrades at the Koppel shop. The new round of layoffs are on account of an influx in imports of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) into the U.S., which are often sold at a price much lower than fair market price, thus hurting domestic manufacturers of the product.
In a news release, Tenaris noted that these imports are mainly manufactured in China and shipped through countries such as Korea, Thailand and Taiwan, mainly into the U.S. market. Most of these countries produce OCTG with the only aim of exporting them to the U.S., it added.
Tenaris stated that it will monitor market conditions and do the needful to mitigate the operations impact.
