Steelmaker Completed Hydrogen Injection Trial at Indiana Blast Furnace

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. announced that it has successfully completed a hydrogen injection trial at its Indiana Harbour #7 blast furnace. The milestone development marks another significant step towards the company’s greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction efforts.

This is the second of the company’s blast furnaces to implement the use of hydrogen as a reductant and fuel source. Earlier in May last year, it had reported successful H2 injection trial at its Middletown Works.

The company used the recently commissioned hydrogen pipeline at Indiana Harbor for the trial, which was carried out in partnership with Line- the company’s primary supplier of hydrogen gas.

Lourenco Goncalves, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Cleveland-Cliffs noted that the company is proud of its ability to use the cutting-edge technology to maintain highest standards at Indiana Harbour #7- the largest blast furnace in the entire North American region. The use of such latest technologies makes its blast furnace steel the cleanest in the world, Goncalves added.

Furthermore, he congratulated the entire team and thanked Line for their valuable contribution in executing the project.
