U.S. Steel Starts $475 Million Q&T Project at Alabama Tubular Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): U.S. Steel has launched construction of a new $475 million quench and temper (Q&T) facility at its Fairfield Tubular Operations in Alabama. This is a major step in the company’s effort to expand domestic production of high-performance oilfield tubular products.

The new line will use heat-treatment technology to enhance the strength, toughness, and durability of steel pipe used in energy exploration and production. The investment is expected to improve U.S. Steel’s ability to manufacture Oil Country Tubular Goods (OCTG), thus enabling it to meet the rising demand from U.S. energy producers.

The Fairfield modernization program also includes a premium threading line, employee training center, warehouse, and upgraded worker facilities. Construction is already underway, with completion of the Q&T line anticipated by 2029.

Once operational, the project is expected to create roughly 250 permanent jobs, including nearly 220 union positions. Also, it is expected to support approximately 600 construction jobs at peak activity.

The latest investment builds on U.S. Steel’s $75 million premium thread line project, announced in November 2025, further expanding the company’s Alabama manufacturing footprint and tubular-product capabilities.

U.S. Steel President and CEO David Burritt said the project would strengthen the company’s manufacturing capabilities and support long-term growth at Fairfield.
