SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The state-run steelmaker, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), announced that it has flagged off the first consignment of hot rolled plates (HR Plates) from the newly installed Sheet Shearing Line (SSL) of Hot Strip Mill at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP).

The first consignment was flagged off in the presence of top company executives and other officials on 22nd April, 2023. A total of 19 HR Plates Packets weighing approximately 126.5 tons were loaded on two railway wagons to be despatched to Ballabgarh Stockyard, said the company press release.

It must be noted that the world class Sheet Shearing Line at the plant is in the ramp-up and commissioning stage. The state-of-the-art line has a capacity of 0.4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of world-class hot rolled plates and also is first-of-its-kind line in the entire country. It is expected to expand SAIL’s product offerings and boost the steelmaker’s market share significantly.

The rolling mill converts slabs into hot-rolled coils. It squeezes slabs, which can range in the thickness from 2-10 inches, thus producing coil of flat-rolled steel about a quarter-inch in thickness and a quarter mile in length.
