SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest steel production figures compiled by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests notable rise in steel output by South American countries during the initial two-month period of the current year. The regional production surged higher by 6.6% compared with the previous year.
During Jan-Feb ’21, the region produced 7.3 million metric tons (Mt) of steel. This compares with the output of 6.6 Mt of steel during early-2020.
The region’s largest steel producer was Brazil. The country reported rise in steel output, despite the ongoing difficulties in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. The steel mills in the nation recorded an output of 5.8 Mt in the first two months of 2021, an increase of 7.3% compared with the corresponding two-month period in 2020. Also, Brazil was the only country to feature in the list of top 10 steel producing countries. The country emerged as the ninth leading steel producer based on year-to-date aggregate.

The South American region comprised Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.
Meantime, the North American region, including the U.S., Mexico and Canada produced 7.1% less steel during the first two months of the year. The Jan-Feb ’21 steel output by the region totalled only 18.5 Mt.
