Rio Tinto commissions carbon-capture trial at China's Shougang steel plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Mining major Rio Tinto (RIO.AX), (RIO.L) said on Monday it had commissioned ​a trial facility to capture ‌carbon dioxide from blast-furnace gas at Chinese steelmaker Shougang Group's operations.

Here are some ​more details:

• The facility is designed ​to capture carbon dioxide contained ⁠in blast furnace gas produced during ​iron-making.

• The facility, located at Shougang's ​Jingtang base in China, can process up to 3,000 cubic metres of blast furnace ​gas per hour and capture ​up to 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

• The ‌commissioning ⁠of the facility forms part of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2022 by Rio Tinto and ​Shougang ​to research ⁠and develop technologies that could help reduce carbon ​emissions across the steel value ​chain.

• Shares ⁠of Rio Tinto were down 0.5% to A$164.2, as of 0102 GMT, ⁠while ​the broader benchmark ​index (.AXJO) was up 0.3%.
