Nova Steel considers expansion in Delta despite tariff challenges

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A local steel plant is expanding, but in an industry that’s been on a tariff roller coaster since 2025. Nova Steel in Delta already supports 183 jobs in Fulton County, with more potentially on the way.

Nova Steel has operations on both sides of the border. Its CEO says the company has found ways to adapt, but there’s one part of its business that’s nearly disappeared.

“So the cross-border transactions, which is a big, big part of my career, has disappeared for now,” said Scott Jones, CEO of Nova Steel.

Nova Steel has operations in both the U.S. and Canada. Jones said tariffs have changed how the company does business. Despite those changes, Jones believes tariffs are necessary to protect domestic manufacturing.

“And if we’re going to compete against Chinese steel, both in Canada and the United States, we would have no chance,” Jones said.

U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur toured the plant and agrees American steel production needs to grow. But she’s concerned about what the trade conflict with Canada could mean for both countries.

“And we need to stop this kind of trade back-and-forth conflict, because it didn’t exist before between our two countries,” Kaptur said.

Even with that uncertainty, Nova Steel is considering two expansion projects, including more warehouse space. Jones said the company is weighing where to invest, with decisions expected by the end of 2028.

Nova Steel’s Delta operation currently supports 183 skilled manufacturing jobs in Fulton County. With expansion plans moving forward, the company says that number could grow by up to 50 more.
