SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The European crude steel production reported substantial decline during the month of January this year.
The steel production by EU-28 countries amounted to 12.293 million tonnes (Mt) during the month, as reported by the World Steel Association (worldsteel). This is significantly down by 12% when matched with the output of 13.964 Mt reported by the region during the same month a year before.
The topmost steel producer in the region was Germany. The country’s output witnessed nearly 18% decline year-on-year from 3.455 Mt to 2.845 Mt. The second largest producer, Italy, saw its output drop by almost 5% over the previous year to 1.874 Mt. In third place was France, whose monthly output totalled 1.294 Mt in January 2020. The country’s output surged higher from the previous year by 4.5%. In fourth and fifth place were Spain and the UK with outputs of 760,000 tonnes and 666,000 tonnes respectively.

The largest decline in output of 47.1% was reported by Luxembourg. On the other hand, the UK’s output surged the most during the month, rising by 9.8% from the previous year.
