SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The crude output statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests marginal decline of 0.8% in output by the European region during February this year. On the other hand, other European countries reported 10.4% year-on-year jump in steel output during the month. It must be noted that the EU-28 region had recorded notable surge in steel output in 2017.
The monthly steel output by the EU-28 countries totaled 13.354 million tonnes (Mt) in February 2018, slightly lower by 0.8% when compared with 13.456 Mt in February last year. The largest regional producer was Germany, followed by Italy and France. The German output dropped by 3.2% over the previous year to 3.340 Mt in Feb ‘18. The output had totaled 3.451 Mt in February last year. The output by Italy was up by 4.5% from 20.002 Mt in February 2017 to 2.093 Mt in Feb ‘18. The output by France totaled 1.251 Mt, marginally higher by nearly 1% over the previous year.

The top three regional producers were Germany (7.040 Mt), Italy (4.110 Mt) and France (2.623 Mt). The other key producers were Spain (2.285 Mt), Poland (1.715 Mt), Austria (1.290 Mt) and Belgium (1.2 Mt).

Meantime, the output by other European countries including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey recorded sharp jump in February 2018. The monthly production by these countries totaled 3.290 Mt as against 2.980 Mt in February last year. Turkey accounted for more than 91% of the total regional output. The Turkish crude steel output surged higher by 8.7% year-on-year from 2.759 Mt to 2.998 Mt.
The cumulative crude steel production by other European countries ended marginally higher by 0.2% over the year. The production totaled 27.706 Mt as compared with 27.645 Mt in Jan-Feb ’17.
