AISI: July Witnessed a Dip in U.S. Steel Imports

Compared to 2024, the year-to-date total and finished steel imports decreased 5.0% and 8.9%, respectively.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. Census Bureau's latest statistics indicates that in July of this year, 2.239 million net tons of steel were imported. This represents a marginal drop of 0.6% from the previous month. In the meantime, finished steel imports were up by 1.3% to 1.686 million net tons in June 2025.

and heavy structural shapeswere the finished steel products with the largest increase in import volumes, with import volumes up 92% and 32%, respectively, from June 2025. Additionally, month over month, imports of tin plates rose by 26%. The top offshore suppliers during the month were South Korea, Brazil, Canada, Mexico and Taiwan.

Compared to 2024, the year-to-date total and finished steel imports decreased 5.0% and 8.9%, respectively.

Overall steel imports decreased by 2.0% and finished steel imports declined by 3.8% during the 12-month period from August 2024 to July 2025.

In July of this year, finished steel import market share was estimated at 19%, according to AISI data.

Imports of tin plates and line pipes increased over the 12-month period from August 2024 to July 2025, compared to the preceding 12-month period. These items had increases in imports by 71% and 16%, respectively.
