AISI: Steel Imports Spiked During 12-Month Period

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The preliminary U.S. Census Bureau data suggests significant surge in total and finished steel imports during the twelve-month period from July 2021 to June 2022, compared with the previous 12-month period, says the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The total steel imports during the one-year period from July last year to June this year was 33.568 million net tons, which is significantly higher by 38.2%, when matched with the imports which had totalled 24.287 million net tons in the previous 12-month period from July 2020 to June 2021.

Meantime, the finished steel imports during the recent twelve-month period totalled 26.215 million net tons, significantly higher by 50.1% over the previous year. The imports had totalled only 17.469 million net tons during the one-year period from July 2020 to June 2021, AISI data said.

The products which reported notable increase in imports over the 12-month period were oil country goods and wire rods which recorded 124.9% and 97.2% surge respectively. The imports of oil country goods were up by 91%. The cold rolled sheets and plates in coils imports were up by 68.5% each year-on-year, AISI press release said.
