AISI Reported Significant Surge in Finished Steel Imports During 12-Month Period

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The preliminary U.S. Census Bureau data suggests significant surge in total and finished steel imports during the twelve-month period from March 2021 to February 2022, compared with the previous 12-month period, says the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The total steel imports during the one-year period from March last year to February this year was 32.539 million net tons, which is significantly higher by 50.1%, when matched with the imports which had totalled 21.680 million net tons in the previous 12-month period from March 2020 to February 2021.

Meantime, the finished steel imports during the recent twelve-month period totalled 24.207 million net tons, significantly higher by 53.1% over the previous year. The imports had totalled only 15.816 million net tons during the one-year period from March 2020 to February 2021.

The products which reported notable increase in imports over the 12-month period were hot rolled sheets and sheets and strip all other metallic coated which recorded 93% and 92% surge respectively. The imports of oil country goods were up by 91%. The wire rods imports recorded a surge by 86%, while the imports of plates in coils were up by 85% year-on-year, AISI press release said.
