In June 2025, Brazil was the offshore country with the highest number of applications for finished steel import permits.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): According to Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data recently issued by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), there was a modest decline in steel import permit applications in June 2025.
In June of this year, 2.250 million net tons of permit applications were filed, according to data from the Commerce Department. This represents an almost 7.4% drop from the 2.428 million net tonnage permit tons recorded the previous month. AISI data shows that the steel import permit tonnage in June 2025 was around 9.4% lower than the final imports of 2.484 million net tons in May 2025.
The import permit tonnage for finished steel in June of this year was 1.727 million net tons, a 2.9% reduction from the final import total of 1.778 million net tons in May 2025.
Permits for reinforcing bars increased by around 54% over the previous month, while permits for wire rods and sheet and strip hot-dipped galvanized increased by 34% and 26%, respectively, over the same period in 2024.Products that have demonstrated significant year-to-date improvements over the same period in 2024 include line pipes, stainless pipe and tube, and tin plate.
In June 2025, Brazil was the offshore country with the highest number of applications for finished steel import permits, followed by Canada, South Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan.
