SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced that its Board of Directors elected Leon Topalian, president and CEO of Nucor Corporation as its new Chairman. He has been elected to serve for a period of two years. He takes over from John Brett, CEO of ArcelorMittal North America, who has been serving as the chairman since March 2020.
AISI also announced that John Brett was elected vice-chairman of AISI. Also, Chuck Schmitt, president of SSAB Americas, was re-elected as vice-chairman. The election took place at the virtual meeting recently held by AISI’s Board of Directors.

Commenting on the new appointment, Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of AISI said that Leon Topalian is one of the global steel industry’s most influential leaders and a vocal advocate for the American steel industry. AISI’s aggressive engagement on key steel industry issues will continue to grow under his direction. The AISI members and the industry as a whole will continue to achieve success under his leadership, he added.
Meantime, Topalian highlighted the challenges from massive global overcapacity driven by foreign government trade-distorting policies and emphasized the need for collective effort in order to ensure the American steel industry remains a strong and vibrant part of the American economy
